PM heads to Brussels after confidence vote victory

Theresa May will head to Brussel seeking concessions for her Brexit deal less than 24 hours after surviving a vote of confidence.

She is set to join an EU summit where she will try to convince EU leaders to agree to assurances on the nature of the backstop.

It comes after the Prime Minister won the ballot on her leadership by 200 votes to 117 last night.

Speaking after the result was announced, Mrs May said: “We now need to get on with the job of delivering Brexit.”

‘Four dead’ after high speed train crash in Turkey

At least four people have been killed and dozens more injured after a high speed train crashed into an overpass in Turkey’s capital, Ankara, officials have said.

A rescue mission was under way after two cars of the train derailed in the collision in the early hours of this morning.

The train was travelling from Ankara to the central Turkish city of Konya.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known.

Mayor warned over London murder rate

Sadiq Khan has been told to take “drastic action” on violent crime after it was revealed London’s murder rate is at a record high.

The capital’s mayor was warned that Londoners are “heartbroken” to hear about the scale of violence on the city’s streets.

A London Assembly crime committee said they were concerned about lack of detail around Mr Khan’s plans to reduce violence.

London's murder rate for 2018 so far is the highest in a calendar year this decade, according to the latest figures.

Police widen search for Strasbourg gunman

Hundreds of security forces have searched eastern France for the gunman behind a deadly attack in Strasbourg.

Police officers, soldiers and border agents on both sides of the Franco-German border are involved in the large-scale manhunt.

Two people died and 13 were injured in the shooting in the French city on Tuesday night.

EastEnders set ‘£27m over budget’

A BBC project to rebuild the set of EastEnders is expected to run over budget by £27million, a watchdog has warned.

The reconstruction is set to cost the public broadcaster £86million in total.

The National Audit Office said lack of expertise, over-optimism on costs and construction delays led to the 45% budget increase.

Three UK teachers up for global teacher prize

Three teachers in England have made the shortlist for the world's "best teacher" award which includes prize money of $1 million.

The Varkey Foundation Global Teacher prize was set up to recognise teachers who make outstanding contributions to the profession.

Three teachers, from London, Birmingham and Bradford, were among others from 39 countries to make this year’s shortlist.
