PM's Brexit plans hang by thread as EU set to flesh out objections

Boris Johnson’s Brexit plans are hanging by a thread after key figures in Brussels said the reaction so far has been “not positive”.

The European Commission welcomed "advances" towards an agreement but said problems with the new blueprint remained.

Under the Prime Minister’s proposals, Northern Ireland would remain in the single market for goods but leave the customs union.

European Parliament Brexit coordinator Guy Verhofstadt said the new deal “doesn't provide the necessary safeguards for Ireland.”

He said the first assessment from Brexit Steering Group, which he chairs, was “not positive.”

The EU is expected to flesh out objections to the PM’s proposals later today.

Fresh inquiry into Met's response to Carl Beech case

Home Secretary Priti Patel is set to launch a fresh inquiry into Scotland Yard’s response to the Carl Beech case.

Beech made false claims about a fictitious VIP paedophile ring which saw a number of senior politicians falsely accused of crimes.

Operation Midland, a 16-month police inquiry that cost £2.5 million, investigated Beech's claims.

The inquiry ended in 2016 without a single arrest.

In July Beech was found guilty of fabricating claims of rape, torture and murder.

He is serving an 18-year jail term.

'Nonsense' plans to deport NHS doctor abandoned

The Home Office has abandoned its plan to deport an NHS doctor who has lived in the UK for the majority of her life.

Mu-Chun Chiang’s visa application had been rejected and she was told to leave the UK or risk six months' imprisonment.

The 27-year-old’s case was described as "a nonsensical administrative issue" and attracted the attention of campaigners.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has since said that after taking up Dr Chiang's case with the Home Office it had been resolved.

Trump's fury at impeachment probe: wasting everyone's time

Donald Trump lashed out at Democrats leading an impeachment inquiry against him, accusing them of “wasting everyone’s time and energy”.

The US President called his rivals the “Do Nothing Democrats” in his latest Twitter tirade.

His furious rant followed a warnings from House Democrats that that they were not "fooling around" with the probe into Mr Trump’s dealings with Ukraine.

First Apprentice contestant fired

The first contestant to leave the 2019 series of The Apprentice has said he is “really gutted” to have been fired.

Chartered engineer Shahin Hassan, 36, was fired from the first episode after failing to sell any tickets for the boys’ safari tour.
