Brexit: Corbyn backs plan for vote on fresh referendum

Jeremy Corbyn has endorsed a plan for MPs to vote on whether a second Brexit referendum should be held.

The Labour leader said he wants the Government to give MPs the final say in the Commons next week.

If the majority back a referendum, Parliament could force Prime Minister Theresa May to hold a fresh public vote.

Bowing to pressure from members of his party's MPs, Mr Corbyn said it is time Labour’s alternative plan took “centre stage”.

Search and rescue mission as plane goes missing over English Channel

An air and sea search is under way after a plane disappeared from radar in the English Channel.

Rescue teams were scrambled to waters north of Alderney after the light aircraft vanished yesterday evening, Guernsey Police said.

The Piper Malibu, with two people on board, lost contact around eight miles north-west of Alderney at 8.30pm, it was reported.

Two helicopters have joined lifeboats on the hunt for aircraft.

'Thundersnow' forecast as temperatures drop

Thundersnow could strike this week as temperatures plummet and forecasters issue ice warnings for much of the UK.

Wintery conditions are likely to cause disruption for road and rail users this morning, the Met Office warned.

And so-called thundersnow, a phenomenon which can occur during only a few months of the year, could also strike.

Attenborough: the Garden of Eden is no more

Sir David Attenborough has urged world leaders to make a fresh push to tackle climate change.

The veteran broadcaster, 92, used his acceptance speech at the World Economic Forum yesterday to tell business leaders and governments to come up with “practical solutions”.

Speaking at the forum in Davos, Switzerland, he said: "What we do now and in the next few years will profoundly affect the next few thousand years.”

Police release four arrested over Londonderry car bomb

Four men arrested on suspicion of carrying out a car bombing in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, have been released.

The men, aged 42, 34 and two aged 21, were arrested on Sunday by detectives investigating the explosion on Saturday.

They have been released unconditionally.

A 50-year-old man arrested on Monday remains in police custody.

Colman and Weisz among Brits vying for nods at the Oscars

Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz are among British stars vying for nods when the Oscar nominations are announced later.

The nominations will be announced by Tracee Ellis Ross and Kumail Nanjiani in Los Angeles at 1.20pm (UK time).
