Strasbourg shooter on the run

A gunman is on the run after killing three people in a shooting near Strasbourg’s iconic Christmas market.

France raised its security alert to the highest level in the wake of the attack in the city yesterday evening.

A major operation to track down the rampaging gunman, who is known to authorities, is underway.

He has been named by police as Cherif Chekatt, a 29-year-old who was born in Strasbourg.

A motive for the attack was not immediately clear but French authorities have launched a terror investigation.

PM ‘on verge of facing confidence vote’

Theresa May is on the verge of facing a confidence vote as Tory rebels mobilise against her, according to reports last night.

A wave of new letters have been submitted to the 1922 Committee chairman amid reports enough have been received to force a vote.

It comes after the Prime Minister put a Commons vote on her Brexit deal on hold after admitting she was heading for a heavy defeat.

Backpacker formally identified

The body of British backpacker Grace Millane has been formally identified, police in New Zealand have said.

Ms Millane, 22, went missing from a hostel in Auckland on December 1 and a body was found on Sunday.

Officers said that identification has now taken place and that her family were "in the process of organising to take her home".

Huawei CFO granted £6m bail

Huawei’s chief financial officer arrested in Canada at the request of US authorities has been granted £6 million bail.

Meng Wanzhou, daughter of the telecommunications giant's founder, was arrested earlier this month.

Washington said Meng and Huawei misled banks about the company's business dealings in Iran. Meng denies the claims.

The technology company's Year In Search project compared the UK public's search habits this year to that in 2017.
