Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford's colleague from This Morning has suggested that their unexpected departure from the show was a catalyst for their marital split.

The television duo, both aged 64, shocked their fans this weekend by announcing they are divorcing after 14 years of marriage. They have been a couple for 27 years and have a 22-year-old son named Jack together.

Ruth and Eamonn became familiar faces to viewers as they presented This Morning on Fridays and during school holidays.

However, in a sudden move in 2021, they were dropped from the morning programme and replaced by Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary. A former co-star now believes that being axed was "the beginning of the end for their marriage".

Behavioural psychologist Jo Hemmings, who frequently appeared on This Morning, confessed she "never noticed any cause for concern" regarding their relationship, reports the Mirror.

Jo observed Eamonn and Ruth presenting together comfortably, and despite their occasional "bickering" and "differences of opinion", she noted it was always "done with warmth, ease, and affection". She believed that working together on the show actually "made them stronger", which is contrary to what many couples might experience as a "strain".

"When they were handed their marching orders from the daytime show, it will have been hard for both sides of their life - personal and professional," Jo explained to The Sun.

Following their exit from This Morning, Eamonn and Ruth found themselves on different schedules, with Eamonn hosting his own morning show and Ruth appearing on Loose Women around lunchtime.

Jo mentioned: "In fact, it's often the beginning of the end when quality time isn't carved out."

She theorises that they may not have had enough date nights since they weren't seen together earlier on before their announcement, and the recent work schedules could have impacted their time together.

"In a way, it's entirely possible that presenting This Morning together on a Friday was their version of quality time," Jo stated. "They certainly got a whole morning together discussing all sorts of things. It was an anchor for them."

Jo explained that without little moments shared together, it's too easy for "a little tear to turn into a wide gulf very quickly".

She confessed that once couples start having separate lives, it becomes "game over".

In a conversation with The Mirror in June 2022, Eamonn poured out his feelings about his departure from This Morning, saying he never understood why he was asked to leave. He also rubbished claims that he left because he had another job at GB News.

He said: "The department of disinformation at ITV can put out all the lies they want. I wish somebody would show me the email or the letter or that I was sent to say, "Eamonn, this is why this is coming to an end". But to tell lies, that I left them to go to GB News... I didn't they left me. Let's get it straight. They left me. I don't care, because our audience is only up."

Claims have surfaced that the departure of Eamonn and Ruth from This Morning had a significant impact on their marriage as they pursued different career paths. "Eamonn and Ruth's relationship changed when they left This Morning. They started moving in different directions in their careers and their priorities started to change," an insider revealed to The Sun.

"As her ITV career continued, Eamonn went down another path and they became ships in the night."

The couple's romance began after they were introduced by a friend in 1997. Years later, they exchanged vows in 2010.

Reflecting on their long-term bond, Ruth mentioned during a Loose Women episode in 2016 that they had been together for a "long, long time" before getting married.
