Morrisons has sparked outcry after shoppers accused the supermarket giant of selling “sexist” t-shirts saying boys have “big ideas” and girls have “big smiles”.

A picture, posted on Twitter on Monday, showing the children’s tops with the two slogans “little man, big ideas” and “little girls, big smiles” has prompted outrage on social media.

Another boys' top is on sale with the slogan “king of the castle” while the girls top with the words “pretty little me”.

Shelley Roche-Jacques posted the picture alongside the caption: “I see you don’t think much of girls”.

The tweet has since been retweeted almost 200 times, with one person on social media accusing the supermarket chain of “rank sexism and misogyny”.

Morrisons defended selling the children's clothing, saying the shirts were “popular” among customers and clothing with the slogan “girl power” is also sold at the stores.

Irene Soldatos posted on Twitter: “This is absolutely appalling Morrisons. It's Victorian. Rank sexism and misogyny. Girls must smile & be pretty, but boys have the big ideas?”

Martina Fowler added: “I work right next to the Chalk Farm store, and shop there 4 my boys almost every day. But disappointed by this.”

Sam Currie said: “Well thanks Morrisons. Let's tell the world boys are clever and girls are vacuous!”

The Supermarket’s response that the store also sells “girl power” t-shirts prompted more anger on Twitter.

Tom posted: “So it's ok to say sexist things, providing some of the things you say aren't sexist?"

A Morrisons spokeswoman told the Standard: "Girls t-shirts with slogans like these are very popular with our customers - there are also girls t-shirts with "I want to be a rock star" and "girl power" messages in store now."
