The Smiths’ 1985 classic Meat is Murder has been transformed into an 8-bit video game where the player gets to save animals from the slaughter.

This Beautiful Creature Must Die features an instrumental arcade-style version of the song on loop.

The mobile-friendly game sport retro graphics and pitches the player in a race against time to save chickens, cows, pigs, and turkeys from being fed through gruesome rotating blades.

Created in collaboration with developer This Is Pop, the game aims to inspire people to pledge to go vegan.

“This game is the biggest social crusade of all, as we safeguard the weak and helpless from violent human aggression,” said Smiths frontman and longtime vegan Morrissey.

“You don’t get that from Pokémon Go,” he added.

The Smiths also gave animals rights organisation PETA permission to use the full-length version of the Meat is Murder as the backing track for video expose of the meat industry.

“This Beautiful Creature Must Die has a fun, nostalgic vibe but also calls out animal agriculture as the biggest threat to human health, animals, and the environment today”, said PETA US Vice President of Marketing Joel Bartlett.

“After mastering the game, players can save animals and the Earth in real life by going vegan.”
