Not only is the annual Cannes International Film Festival a two-week marathon red carpet opportunity for luxury fashion brands, but it’s also a fortnight in which some of the world’s biggest and most beautiful bling goes on display.

Red carpets and dinners twinkled this year with the bevvy of A-list stars from across the globe frosted in statement-making masterpieces from some of the world’s most prestigious haute jewellers.

And as this year's festival comes to a close, we note a few fine jewellery trends have emerged.

Diamond waterfall earrings are having a major moment. Tina Kunakey’s angular triangles by Messika were a particular triumph.

Emeralds were the stone of choice this season. Emeralds first gained popularity back at the Golden Globes in January, when celebrities chose to accessorise their all-black outfits with green-stoned jewellery. Why? Emeralds are apparently a symbol of hope, renewal and growth; the ancient Egyptians thought that they stood for rebirth, and Aristotle believed that the stone would help wearers in their new ventures.

The trend is clearly enduring, as they were all over the red carpets in Cannes.

Finally, short diamond necklaces were everywhere – from single chunky ones to layered strands. Model Elsa Hosk scored a major win with her sparkling Chopard number, paired with an old-school 1950s blowout for a look that oozed old-school Hollywood siren.
