Mosul Residents Raise Cross Near Damaged St. George Monastery to Mark Feast of St. George

Mosul residents, alongside several Iraqi military and political officials, helped the local Christian community raise a large wooden cross near the damaged St. George Monastery on April 24.

A number of local and national Iraqi Christian groups were involved in the event to mark the Feast of St. George in Mosul, including Noah’s Ark for Peaceful Coexistence. The St. George Monastery, a late 17th century church restored in 1931, was partially damaged by Islamic State fighters in the wake of its 2014 capture of the city.
