A mother who gave birth to twins with different skin colours has spoken of the disbelief she faces about whether the twin boys are both hers.

Daniel and David Omirin were born just minutes apart. Despite parents Stacy, 30, and Babajide, 38, both being black, baby David has pale, white skin and golden hair.

His brother Daniel, on the other hand, has black skin and dark, curly hair – just like his parents and older sister Demilade, four.

The twins’ difference in skin tone is because little David has albinism, which means his skin and hair lack pigmentation due to a congenital absence of melanin.

Unsurprisingly, the twins attract attention every time they go out, with their mum saying they are treated like celebrities.

But Stacy, a clothes designer, also says the twins’ different appearance causes people to question whether they are both hers.

“I have to answer questions all the time when we are out,” she says.

“People say ‘excuse me madam, which one of the kids is yours?’

“I just say both of them are mine and people look at me as if I am joking.”

Stacy says even she was taken by surprise when the brothers were born.

“When the doctor told me my kids are not identical I didn’t know what to expect,” she says.

“But then I saw they had different colour hair and skin and I couldn’t believe it, so I’m not surprised other people are shocked too.”

Daniel and his fair-skinned brother David were born on 26 February in Lagos, Nigeria, by caesarean section.

Recalling the moment she first caught a glimpse of her unique babies, Stacy, who had no idea they had different skin colours until they were born, said: “It was a massive surprise.

“Daniel came first, and then the nurse said the second baby has golden hair.

“I thought, how can this be possible. I looked down and saw David, he was completely white.

“I called my husband in and he couldn’t believe what he saw either.

“It felt like we had been given a miracle.”

Stacy said the doctors and nurses had “never seen anything like it” and flocked to her bedside to take photographs of the newborns.

After four days in hospital the twins were discharged home, where other members of the family were also stunned after meeting them.

“They are special to everyone and I love them,” Stacy says of her boys.

“It feels special to be their mother because they are a special kind of twins.

“I believe I am blessed and I am so proud of them.”

David was born with a condition called oculocutaneous albinism, which affects one in 20,000 births each year.

While there are no figures available for how many sets of twins are born where only one has albinism, other cases have been reported in the Netherlands and Mozambique.

Incidences of oculocutaneous albinism are rare in African countries and Stacy believes David could be one of the only albino babies in Lagos.

The mum of three revealed that she has recently been contacted by a UK-based modelling agency who have got in touch regarding potential photoshoots.

Plans are at an early stage but a possible trip to England has already been discussed

In the meantime the unique family are looking forward to spending Christmas together at home in Lagos.
