A mother in India has given birth to two babies sharing the same body.

Babita Ahirwar, 21, was told she was expecting twins, but gave birth to babies who share internal organs.

The conjoined twins were each born with a head but share the same body and three arms.

Doctors are investigating if it is a case of dicephalic parapagus (tribrachius) twins.

Mrs Ahirwar and her husband, Jaswant Singh Ahirwar, 25, are from a village in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

The couple got married 18 months ago. The twins were born by caesarian section on Saturday.

Mr Ahirwar said his wife fainted after seeing the twins.

"We are shocked,” he said.

“It is unbelievable. Everyone is shocked to see them. We were told after the ultrasound that we are going to have twins.”

The couple found out the twins were conjoined in the 35th week of pregnancy, it was reported.

Dr Surendra Sonkar, a paediatric specialist at the district hospital in Vidisha, said: “They are a case of conjoined twins.

Cases of conjoined twins are said to appear in one in 50,000 to one in 100,000 births.
