Mothers Reaching For Wine After School Run Because Of Stress

More and more mothers are reaching for the wine bottle immediately after the school run because of stress, it has been warned.

Medical experts said many women are grabbing a glass of wine at about 3.30pm on weekdays, straight after they have come home from the school run.

The charity Alcohol Concern warned that women are swapping a mid-afternoon cup of tea for a glass of wine, and then continue drinking into the evening.

It fears these habits could be passed on to their children, who might think it is normal behaviour to have an alcoholic drink to relax.

The survey of 1,250 adults by Alcohol Concern revealed that parents are twice as likely to be “dependent” drinks that those who do not have children.

Alison Wheeler, of Drink Wise, said: “We are seeing an emerging culture among some mothers who see it as a way to socialise and relax after the school day.

“There is a real problem with drinking that starts after school. It used to be a cup of tea, now it’s a glass of wine at 3.30pm instead.”
