Thousands of motorbike-riding football fans thronged the streets of Sorong in West Papua, Indonesia, waving enormous flags of their chosen World Cup teams on Sunday 20 November. Residents of the seemingly soccer-mad city welcomed Qatar 2022 with their colourful convoys. Among the flags on display were those of the Netherlands, Brazil, Germany and Argentina. Notably, Indonesia did not qualify for the tournament. While local police did not give permission for the convoy, because they were concerned about public safety, the fans ignored that and carried on with what turned out to be a good-natured celebration of sport.
