Motorcyclist, 30, killed after being chased by police in east London

A motorcyclist has been killed and another man riding pillion was injured in a police chase on a major east London road early on Monday.

The rider, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene after the motorbike collided with railings on Commercial Road at 2.20am.

Another man, 29, riding on the back of the bike, was left suffering “serious injuries” and was rushed for treatment at a nearby hospital.

Scotland Yard said the motorcycle was being pursued by officers before the fatal crash “having failed to stop”.

A Met spokesman said: “Despite the efforts of officers and ambulance colleagues, a 30-year-old man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Officers await confirmation that family members have been informed.

“A 29-year-old man was also taken to hospital. His condition has been assessed as not life-threatening.

“The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards has made a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. They have advised that they will be conducting an independent investigation.*”

A crime scene has been established on the road which runs through Whitechapel and Shadwell.

An investigation is being led by the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit.

Motorists are being warned the scene’s location will cause “significant disruption” in the area.
