Yahoo News Motoring nostalgia up for grabs at auction
A vast, fascinating collection of automobilia is coming up for auction in the next couple of days, featuring a wealth of period forecourt artefacts such as oil and petrol cans and enamel signs advertising various forgotten marques.
The Charterhouse auction in Sherborne, Dorset on July 18 and 19 is the place to be for collectors of automobilia, not to mention classic car enthusiasts who want a few inexpensive car-related items with which to decorate their garage.
The hundreds of items of automobilia being put up for auction were amassed by a collector in Somerset over several years. With his property bulging at the seams, he decided to have a sort out.
Items he decided to let go include enamel signs, petrol pump globes, forecourt oil dispensers, oil cans, bottles and drums, dealership light boxes, petrol signs and many, many other items, all of which are expected to sell for thousands of pounds.
Most were once a common sight at garages and besides the road. With most of the collection being offered without reserve, the auction offers bidders a great opportunity to see automobilia which rarely comes on the market and add it to their collections without paying over the odds.
The auctioneer is also holding an auction of classic and vintage cars at Sherborne Castle on July 21, followed by a classic and vintage motorcycle auction at the excellent Haynes International Museum at Sparkford on August 10.
“Automobilia is the term used to describe anything related to motor cars, motor racing and garages or really to do with mechanically propelled vehicles,” said Matthew Whitney of Charterhouse.
“Today the market for automobilia is strong, with bidders looking to buy anything from old enamel signs to petrol pumps to oil cans to furnish their garages, barns and indoor man caves.”
