Motorist with 62 penalty points on his license is STILL allowed to drive

A driver who has amassed an astonishing 62 penalty points on his license is still legally allowed to get behind the wheel.

The unidentified man, from West Yorkshire, is just one of 10,000 people on the roads who are allowed to carry on driving despite exceeding the 12 points that usually mean a six-month ban.

Freedom of Information requests from the BBC found that the man in question had been speeding.

Magistrates are able to disregard the automatic ban from 12 penalty points “in exceptional cases”.

However, Brian Cornick, who lost his stepdaughter in a motorbike accident, told the BBC that there should be “no excuses”.

He said: “The magistrates are being weak. Twelve points should be the ceiling.”

Circumstances that would allow someone to continue driving include it having a knock-on effect that would mean someone being able to pay their mortgage or feed their family, according to the Magistrates’ Association.

The figures also showed that 203 people with more than 18 points on their license were still allowed to drive, while Greater London had the most people (1,385) driving over 12 points.

David Nichols, from road safety charity Brake, described the figures as “absolutely shocking”.

He added: “The penalty points system is supposed to be in place to protect the public from dangerous repeat offenders and it’s appalling that these risky repeat offenders are allowed to keep driving.”
