MOTORISTS have been warned to expect further long delays on the roads in Christchurch this week.

Traffic was backed up along many of the routes around the town centre last week after SGN carried out emergency work at Fountain Roundabout.

The inside westbound lane of the A35 was blocked off on part of the Christchurch Bypass, the roundabout itself and Barrack Road to allow engineers to safely work on the site.

The lane closure was lifted over the weekend, however, Christchurch councillor Simon McCormack has said the works have not been completed.

In a post on social media, the Christchurch Independents member, who represents Burton and Grange ward, said: "The gas works at Fountain Roundabout have not been completed and there may be some traffic build up tomorrow through Christchurch, so please allow extra time on your journey to allow for this."

Along with the warning, Cllr McCormack said people should not take out their frustrations over traffic delays on SGN's engineers.

He wrote: "Please remember that the workmen didn't cause the leak, however, they are working hard to try and fix the problem as quickly as they can.

"They have already been subject to some abuse from motorists. Nobody deserves to be abused while at work.

"As I said in my earlier posts I will be talking with the streetworks team at BCP to see if we can come up with a better solution for when there are problems in this location as it causes gridlock around the whole town."

"To keep everyone safe around our work area, we've temporarily closed the outside lane westbound of the Christchurch Bypass and Fountain Roundabout."
