GPS guided parachutes were deployed to drop supplies to firefighters battling the August Complex fires in Mendocino County.
Footage shared by the US Forest Service at Mendocino National Forest on August 21 shows one of the motorized parachutes, which were carrying a food resupply, in action.
“The motorized GPS guided parachutes went through smoke to get down to the drop zone,” the service said on Facebook.
According to the same post, four were in the air simultaneously and dropped from over 11,000 feet, three of which landed within 100 feet of target. Another snagged in a tree but was retrieved. Credit: U.S. Forest Service – Mendocino National Forest via Storyful
