Jose Mourinho is a past-master at psychology and he took every opportunity to get one over on his opposite number Antonio Conte ahead of Manchester United’s 2-1 come-from-behind win over Chelsea on Sunday.

The United boss has been embroiled in a spat with his Chelsea counterpart for a while and the pair have often traded barbs and insults since Conte’s arrival at Mourinho’s former club.

And the Portuguese still knows most of the Chelsea players – and used this to his advantage, by making a point of shaking hands with every one of the Blues’ players before heading to the dugout at Old Trafford.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher saw what Mourinho was doing and told viewers that it was likely the Portuguese was trying to “unsettle” the Chelsea first XI.

Mourinho was unable to shake hands with Conte, however, as the Italian, wary of what the United boss was trying to do, kept his head down and did not make eye contact as he made his way to the dugout.

But Mourinho followed him over to the away dugout and stuck out his hand, forcing Conte to accept the gesture.

And after goals from Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard gave United the victory, Mourinho again offered his hand and then handed a young fan a piece of paper as he made his way to the dressing room. It appeared to be notes that he had made during the game.

It would likely have made the youngster’s year. How typically Mourinho.
