‘Mowgli girl’, 8, who walks on all fours is found living with monkeys

An eight-year-old girl who walks on all fours and is unable to talk has been found living with monkeys in India.

The child has been dubbed ‘Mowgli girl’ because of the similarities between herself and the character from The Jungle Book, who is raised by wolves.

Police discovered the youngster is a remote nature reserve in Bahraich, in the northern part of the country.

She reportedly screeches to communicate and walks using all four limbs – just like the monkeys she lived with.

Authorities have no idea who the little girl is, where she came from or how long she had been living in the wild.

They added that she appeared comfortable with the apes at Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary, close to the border with Nepal.

The girl was discovered by accident when Sub-inspector Suresh Yadav found her while he was on a routine patrol.

She was taken to hospital following the discovery and has been looked after there for the past two months.

Inspector Ram Avtar Singh, from Motipur station, in Bahraich, said: “She was terrified of us, she could not speak or hear us properly.

“She was surrounded by three monkeys. She had wounds on her body specifically on her elbow and one on her leg.

“She was wearing clothes but not very dirty, it looks like she was abandoned by her family.

“She looked weak and was very hungry. We gave her some food to eat. She looked miserable.

“If we hadn’t rescued her she could have been eaten by other animals.”

Chief Medical Officer DK Singh added to Scroll.in: “The girl was found two months back, eats and walks like animals, and runs away on seeing humans.

“She has marks on her skin, looks like she has lived with animals for quite some time. Now she is better and healthy, showing improvement.”

Doctors say the girl has learned to walk upright but continues to walk on fours.

They added that she is prone to bouts of anger and violence and still does not understand any language.
