Male MP who shouted, 'Sit down, love!' at Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson branded 'sexist toad'
An MP who appeared to tell Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson to “sit down, love” has been branded an “entitled sexist toad”.
Ms Swinson was speaking during a Commons debate on the prospect of an early general election when she was heckled by an unidentified male colleague.
The East Dunbartonshire MP had given way - allowed another MP to interrupt - while she was speaking, but refused to a second time, prompting the call.
The comment was shared by Layla Moran MP who tweeted: “Whoever told @joswinson to “Sit down darling” or whatever was said a) picked the wrong lady to mess with and b) is clearly an entitled sexist toad.”

She later added that the man had actually said: “Sit down, love”, adding: “Still unclear who it was. It can be heard on the playback. I wasn’t in the chamber to see who.”
Ms Moran wasn’t the only person to take exception at the comment.

One Twitter user wrote: “I think I heard a male MP call out,’sit down darling’, when Jo Swinson was trying to speak. Whoever it was is a sexist dinosaur.
“What a fool he must be. And I’m sick of male MP’s trying to use their louder voices to shout down female MPs.”
Wow I thought I heard someone say "sit down love" what a disgrace. Obviously threatened by women and thinks parliament is jobs for the boys and boys it is as men do not behave like that.

Yet others suggested that the comment was actually, “Sit down, Nige”, referring to Nigel Evans, who was apparently trying to get up and speak.
Before everyone whips themselves into a twitter frenzy he said sit down “Nige”. He was speaking to Nigel Evans MP who was trying to interject.

Ms Swinson has not responded to the heckle.
During her speech, she said: “The Prime Minister’s response is that the passing of this Bill somehow messes up his plan – is he saying that he could only get a good deal by threatening a no-deal first?”
She added: “He knows there’s no such thing as a great deal and he’s scared of getting found out. ‘I don’t think anyone can accuse us of not being clear on where we stand on Brexit.”
