Police in Essex said a 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder, after Conservative MP David Amess was stabbed while holding meetings with constituents at a church in Leigh-on-Sea.

According to police, Amess, who represented Southend West in Essex, was found injured but died at the scene.

A knife was recovered and police were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident, they said.

Tributes poured in for the 69-year-old, who worked as a lawmaker since 1983. Speaker of the House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle called Amess “a lovely man.” Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the attack was “awful beyond words.”
