An attempt by opposition and rebel MPs to block the winter fuel payment cut has failed in the House of Commons. The controversial plan to remove the winter fuel payment from millions of pensioners is set to go ahead following today's vote.

New Stafford MP Leigh Ingham was one of 53 Labour MPs who did not turn up to vote on the motion today. One Labour MP voted in favour of the Tory motion to scrap the cut — Jon Trickett of Normanton and Hemsworth — who said he could not ‘in good conscience’ support the government.

The region's Labour MPs all voted against the motion and with the government, including Dr Allison Gardner, MP for Stoke-on-Trent South; Gareth Snell, MP for Stoke-on-Trent Central; David Williams, MP for Stoke-on-Trent North; Adam Jogee, MP for Newcastle-under-Lyme; and Sarah Russell, MP for Congleton.
