MPs' Expenses: They Claimed For That?

MPs' Expenses: They Claimed For That?

While Tory MP Rob Wilson's 9p expenses claim for a 352-yard journey might seem like an all-time low - it's not.

:: A number of MPs have actually gone to the trouble of claiming as little as 2p: for pencil sharpeners.

Step forward former Labour MP Austin Mitchell, who claimed for a "metal single hole pencil sharpener" in 2013.

He wasn't alone. In the same year Conservative MPs Brandon Lewis, Bob Stewart, Jessica Lee; the Liberal Democrats Ian Swales and Norman Baker; and Labour's Alison Seabeck and Seema Malhotra all claimed 2p for their sharpeners.

However, Conservative MP Jonathan Lord claimed 5p for his.

:: David Cameron claimed a whole 7p for foldback clips in 2013 while his deputy at the time, Nick Clegg, claimed £5.16 for a Tipp-Ex Office Mouse.

It must be noted, however, that these are claims for office equipment for staff and taken together they total a significant amount.

MPs could be out of pocket if they overlooked every expense under £1.

:: Mr Wilson's 9p car trip claim isn't even the lowest travel expense claim.

Shadow education secretary Tristram Hunt claimed back 4p for a 176-yard journey in 2010 to a "constituency meeting" at a high school.

:: There's no excuse for MPs not knowing the cost of a pint of milk.

They seem perfectly able to bill 40p for "office milk" or "milk for volunteers" with great regularity.

However, it would appear they are less generous when it comes to paying for intern and student placement lunches.

International Development Minister Grant Shapps, claimed 30p for "intern lunch". That's not even the price of a Mars Bar.

Labour leadership hopeful Andy Burnham managed to spring 95p for lunch for his placement student.

:: In other equipment, the Liberal Democrat Paul Burstow billed 49p for a "brass radiator key".
