White socks can certainly be a challenge to keep pristine - it often seems like they come out of the wash still riddled with stains, no matter what the temperature or how long you leave them in for.

An exasperated Facebook user sought advice on the social media site, posting in the 'Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips' group the following plea: "This is about washing white socks, I can never get the soles clean, any tips please TIA."

The group's members were quick off the mark to offer up their own tried and tested methods for tackling stubborn sock stains, proposing everything from natural solutions to recommending specific laundry products that promise to make quick work of the problem.

A leading recommendation was Napisan Stain Remover, which comes with an affordable price tag of around £4.50 from most UK grocery stores. Echoing the effectiveness of the product, one member commented: "Napisan works wonders.", while another suggested: "White socks soak in napisan before wash overnight," reports the Express.

Others pitched in with suggestions like using white vinegar and/or bicarbonate of soda. One group participant advised: "If its not broken, don't fix it."

They went on to advise making a paste with vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, a small amount of washing up liquid and water to pre-treat the soles of the socks. Another tip included putting white vinegar in the drum with the liquid detergent using the provided measuring cup: "Make a wee paste vinegar, bicarbonate of soda n a teeny bit of washing up liquid n water. Pre treat the soles. Or even just put some white vinegar in the measuring cup that comes with liquid detergent, straight in the drum xx".

One more chimed in, recommending a sprinkle of bicarbonate soda and white vinegar directly onto the socks, then washing as usual: "Bicarbonate soda sprinkle some on the socks with white vinegar and just put them in the wash as normal."

One peculiar method involved boiling the socks on the stove, as one individual suggested: "Hot boiling water and washing up and bicarbonate soda scrub in the sink by hand then in the washer."

"My nana used to put all the white sock in a soup pan and boil wash them some years ago."

Other products recommended by the cleaning enthusiasts included Dr Beckmans Colour Catcher, Pink stain remover spray and Pink stain remover powder.
