It's that time of the year, the season is truly coming over all festive and the Christmas celebrations are now in full swing.

George Square has now joined St Enoch Square in being transformed into Winterfest with a fun fair, stalls, a big wheel, and the return of the covered ice rink.

Visitors, residents and local families alike are now flocking to this popular Christmas event and it's always a huge draw for kids who want to enjoy the festive fun, meaning parents have to start planning their trip – often mid-shopping spree.

So, with everyone watching their budgets in the lead-up to the big day, we've taken a look at what a family of four - two adults, two children – can expect to roughly pay, based on enjoying a few of the attractions, the big wheel, and the ice rink included, plus enjoying a bite to eat. As always this an approximation and may differ on the day, with prices also subject to possible change.

The Ice Rink

Starting with the ice rink, which is one of the biggest draws, to enjoy some time on the ice, your best bet is to buy tickets online (from the itison website), if you buy a ticket for peak times, it's £51.25 all in for two adults (over 1.4 m) and two children (under 1.4 m).

Attractions

From the ice rink, it is a short walk to the fairground rides, and for the Wave Swinger (£5) smaller children may be too wee to get on, there are plenty of rides for smaller kids such as Santa train ride and mini carousel which are £3 each, that's another £6 for the two kids or £12 if you do both.

Food and Drink

After you've had fun on the rides, you'll want to get some food and drink to refuel.

Going for the most obvious option, the German Grill, you can split a large Bratwurst and chips between one adult and child, you would pay £24 for all four, Bratwurst £8 and chips £4.

Throw in two cans of juice and that's an additional £4.

For a wee mulled wine each for the adults (£5 each) that would add on another £10 .

And we're guessing it wouldn't be a family day out without the kids wanting something sweet, so to grab some large cookies, it'll cost you £4 each.

To finish off, you'll obviously want to have a go on the Big Wheel, which at 33m offers stunning views of the city and the ideal opportunity for a cute family photo.

Here, it's £7.50 each for the adults and £6.50 for kids under 1.2m, so that's another £28.

Ice skating: £51.25

Kiddie rides: £12

Food and drink: £46

Big Wheel: £28

So by our calculation, an average day out for a family would come to around approximately £137 (if you are going all out) which includes time at the ice skating, two rides for the kids, food and drink and shot on the big wheel.
