A PERFORMANCE of a much-loved opera is set to take place in Christchurch in April.

Hurn Court Opera will be bringing Puccini’s La Bohème to the Regent Centre on April 11, as one of only three performances of the opera.

The famous show is set in 19th century Paris, where young seamstress Mimi and poet Rodolfo fall in love.

Puccini tells their tragic story through some of opera’s most touching music, as Mimi becomes part of Rodolfo’s ‘lively’ artistic circle, but the harsh reality of illness and poverty takes its toll.

Hurn Court Opera provides professional performance opportunities for emerging classical singers.

Leads Robert Forrest (Rodolfo) and Oksana Lepska (Mimi) are now launching themselves into the competitive world of international opera.

Musical director Lynton Atkinson said: “La Bohème is a perfect introduction for anyone new to opera, but our production will appeal to aficionados too.

“We believe in telling the story in a faithful and accessible way.

“I’m convinced the singers are all going to be enchanting, and people can look forward to a vibrant, colourful, but utterly tender performance of a very well-loved work.”
