Mulan fans outraged over two major changes to live-action remake
Mulan fans have been left outraged after it was revealed that two major changes will be made to the upcoming live-action remake.
The new film will not feature any songs, unlike the 1998 animated Disney classic which was famed for tracks including I’ll Make a Man Out of You and A Girl Worth Fighting For.
Speaking about the decision, director Niki Caro confirmed that there are “no songs right now, much to horror of my children.”
He told Moviefone: “It’s a big, girly martial arts epic. It will be extremely muscular and thrilling and entertaining and moving.”
If that news wasn’t bad enough, fans were dealt another blow when it was revealed Mulan’s love interest Li Shang won’t be in the film. He has been replaced by a new character who will act as Mulan’s rival.
One Twitter user slammed the decision as “blasphemous” while another accused film bosses of “screwing” with the plot.
Others questioned why Beauty and the Beast remained a musical, with one tweeting: “If Beauty and the Beast got songs then I should be able to sing with my boy Li Shang the best Disney bop ‘I’ll make a man out of you’ #mulan.”
Wait a hot second, why is Captain Li Shang being replaced by this dude in the new #Mulan. First no music, now this. Grrr pic.twitter.com/tE17hM1G7p

The news comes months after 112,000 fans signed a petition calling on film bosses to ensure a white actress is not cast in the titular role.
Set up by Natalie Molnar, the petition called for an end to the “disturbing trend of whitewashing in big-budget movies”.
It was announced earlier this year that the studio is focusing its casting search in mainland China for the main roles, including Mulan herself.
Mulan is set for release in 2018.
