Multiple crashes in Cornwall as freezing weather wreaks havoc

There have been a large number of serious crashes across roads in Cornwall over the last week. The county has been hit with treacherous weather from Storm Bert, as well as snow and ice, since last Wednesday, November 20, and driving conditions have proved treacherous.

The collisions have led to one death and a number of other casualties being taken to hospital with a variety of injuries. A number of key roads across the county, including the A30, have seen road closures as a result of the crashes.

Below we have produced a round-up of the traffic collisions reported by Cornwall Live over the last seven days. They include drivers becoming trapped in wreckage, cars skidding out of control and a road worker who lost his life when a lorry collided with two highways maintenance vehicles.

A30 chaos as snow and ice hit Cornwall

There was traffic chaos on the A30 after snow and ice hit Cornwall last Wednesday (November 20). The treacherous weather led to multiple crashes and break-downs on the road.

A stretch of the A30 was closed throughout rush hour after a four-vehicle crash. Police confirmed that one person was taken to hospital following the collision near the Jamaica Inn.

There were a number of other collisions on the A30 last Wednesday, including a vehicle which collided with the central barrier, a single-vehicle crash at Temple, and a collision in icy conditions at Five Lanes.

Trapped driver rescued after crash

A man was rescued from his car after it flipped upside down in a crash near Newquay last Thursday (November 21). The three-vehicle collision took place on the A3058 at Kestle Mill shortly after 10pm.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and found one car on its roof. The driver of the car was trapped inside before being rescued by fire crews.

They removed the side of the car in order to safely extract him. He was then left with paramedics for treatment.

Highways worker tragically killed in crash

A man tragically died after a multi-vehicle crash on the A30 on Sunday morning (November 24). The collision, which involved two highways maintenance vehicles and a lorry, took place heading westbound near the Pennygillam off slip at around 7.30am.

A man in his 50s, from one of the highway maintenance vehicles, was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Sadly he died later on Sunday evening. His next of kin have been informed and will be supported by specialist officers.

Another person travelling in the highway maintenance vehicles was taken to hospital. However, their injuries are not life-threatening.

A 51-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Car crashes into central barrier on A30

A lane was shut on the A30 after a car crashed into the central reservation on Monday morning (November 25). The collision took place heading eastbound at Redruth.

The lane was shut near the Avers Roundabout and led to slow traffic throughout rush hour.

Biker rushed to hospital after crash with car

A motorcyclist was rushed to hospital after a crash in Truro on Tuesday morning (November 26). Devon and Cornwall Police was called to the A390 Treyew Road at around 7am.

The crash involved a motorbike and a car. Police confirmed the motorcyclist was taken to hospital by ambulance but their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

Five injured after Mercedes and two white vans crash

Five people were taken to hospital after a crash near Wadebridge yesterday morning (Tuesday, November 26). The air ambulance was called to the A389 at St Issey at around 8.30am.

The collision involved a Mercedes and two white vans. Police have confirmed that a teenage girl and a woman suffered serious injuries in the collision.

The girl, who was a passenger in the Mercedes, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Treliske Hospital and onward to Bristol Children’s Hospital. The driver of the car, a woman in her 30s, sustained potentially life-changing injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Investigating officers have since launched an appeal to track down the driver of one of the vans involved. They are urging anyone with information to contact them via their website here or by calling 101 quoting log number 174 of 26/11/24.
