Hull Kingston Rovers half-back Mikey Lewis being viewed as a potential worthy Steve Prescott Man of Steel winner by Sam Tomkins has been backed up by the Robins head coach Willie Peters, who thinks the same.

Tomkins won Man of Steel twice, in 2012 and 2021, and he is one of only four players to be a multiple winner of it, with the others being Ellery Hanley, Paul Sculthorpe and Andy Farrell. Tomkins said: "For me, he's the Man of Steel this year. He's been vital to where Hull KR have got to."

Lewis produced an eye-catching assist for a pivotal Tom Opacic try and also used his kicking game to effect again as Hull KR secured a top-two finish for the first time in Super League.

Asked about that comment by Sky Sports pundit Tomkins, on Lewis, after Rovers' 26-16 win over Leeds Rhinos, Peters said: "I'd be backing Mikey as well, there's no doubt about that. The growth all year that I've seen in him with maturity and growth off the field, it all starts there. When you are a rugby league player, your habits start off the field and he's created a lot of good habits off the field and that's floated into his training and into his game.

"He has taken on a role this year. Tyrone (May) has also taken on a role that he wasn't used to, he was always playing alongside say Mitchell Pearce or Nathan Cleary who game managed and has taken that on. And Mikey has taken a large part of that as well, with our last plays and kicking and that type of thing. For me he is still scratching the surface, that's the exciting part, we'll see what he's like in a couple of years of time.

"Rugby league needs to be very important to him over the next couple of years. Because, if it is, who knows where it can go."
