A Nottingham mum has been forced to leave her home after it was plagued by flies following a harrowing discovery in a neighbouring flat. A number of residents living in flats in Iona Gardens, Top Valley, Nottingham, have had their homes infested by the insects and have called on Nottingham City Council for help.

Their plight is made worse by the knowledge that they originated from another flat where a man's body was found on Thursday, September 19. A woman, who lives in a privately rented home at the block of flats, said she and her child had to leave her property due to the impact of the pests.

"Someone had passed away in the block of flats, we don't know how long he was in there for, but when he was taken out by police they let the council know it needed to be cleaned.

"After that I started to notice a few flies in my property, which is unusual. In my flat I had closed my windows but they were somehow still getting in through the floor or somehow. It is so disgusting, but it is much worse for my neighbour who lives underneath the flat.

"Other people have nowhere else to go." Nottingham City Council explained it was working with the man's family and police, who are currently examining his death, to get into the property so it can be cleaned.

The 22-year-old woman, who has lived at Iona Gardens since 2021, criticised what she saw as lack of action by the council.

She added: "Flies aren't the nicest things anyway, but knowing where they've come from I can't keep my one-year-old daughter in that flat until they clean the other one.

"They told me to pay for pest control but that didn't seem right. They had told us they were going to clean it on Monday, but they still haven't come out - they've told us they can't do anything until they get the key from the man's next of kin or the police.

"There are at least three people impacted and I don't feel comfortable living there with my daughter, but they don't seem to care even though we've been forced to move out."

A city council spokesperson said: “We have been made aware of the death in Bestwood, and our thoughts are with their family at this sad time. Police are still making their enquiries and we are working with them and the family to arrange access to the property to allow us to clean the home.

"We have contacted neighbours to let them know this and we hope to have the situation sorted as soon as possible.”
