A complete stranger showed a tremendous act of kindness when a mother-to-be unexpectedly went into labour on the pavement outside her home.

Katie Davenport, 33, was not expecting her baby to arrive for another four days when her water broke while nodding off on the sofa.

Her mother, Colette Howard, and sister, Sarah Hawkins, began driving to the closest hospital but just minutes into the journey they were advised to stop by doctors because the birth was well underway.

Luckily local homeowner Claire Hart, a support worker, came out of her property and invited Katie in - where she gave birth on the sofa.

Four paramedics arrived at 37-year-old Claire's home and baby Caitlin was delivered there, weighing 8lb and 14oz.

Katie, from Cheltenham, said: ‘I was in agony, it's all a bit of a blur.

‘To be able to get from a cold street and lie down and be looked after properly - it felt fantastic. The world's a much better place with people like her.

‘I could not be more grateful and because of her I have got a healthy baby girl.’

After the birth, he family were taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, where staff said Katie and the baby, named Caitlin, were healthy and well.

But it doesn’t seem that Katie, who gave birth to her second child, will be looking to do so any time soon.

She said her first birth with two-year-old daughter Mary lasted 16 hours compared to her most recent experience which lasted just 45 minutes.

Katie added: "I was in agony, I have never felt any pain like that. It went from zero to 1000 in less than 10 minutes.

"If I'd had Caitlin first Mary would not have been born. I'm even thinking about getting sterilised, it was excruciating. I will never do it again."

Katie and her partner Mitchell Bolton, 46, are now hoping to thank Claire in person and introduce her to baby Caitlin.
