The mummified body of Manfred Fritz Bajorat, a German explorer, has been found inside his ruined yacht in the Philippines.

Two fishermen spotted the damaged vessel, named Sayo, drifting by off the coast of Barobo in Surigao del Sur.

The remains of the 59-year-old were found sat by the radio telephone of 40ft yacht.

It is not known how long Bajorat has been dead, how he died or, indeed, if he was about to call for help.

A friend told BILD, a German newspaper, that he last heard from Bajorat a year ago. However, the last reported sighting is as far back as 2009.

Christopher Rivas, 23, from Barobo, was fishing with a friend between 40 and 60 miles from the coast when he spotted the yacht.

Even from afar, the pair could see that its sail was broken.

Police spokeswoman Goldie Lou Siega said: “We have no evidence of a second person aboard and no weapon was found on the yacht.”

Dr Mark Benecke, a forensic criminologist in the city of Cologne, told BILD: “The way he is sitting seems to indicate that death was unexpected, perhaps from a heart attack.”

Bajorat was identified by papers on board. Officers were reportedly unable to find his wallet, but other valuables remained.
