People are apparently not getting tired of reboots, remakes and superhero movies: Beauty and the Beast's currently the highest grossing film of the year, closely followed by Logan and Kong: Skull Island.
No wonder, then, Universal Pictures are keen to snatch up some publicity for their upcoming The Mummy remake, which stars Tom Cruise, Peaky Blinders actor Annabelle Wallis, and Sofia Boutella as the titular character. The studio has debuted the second trailer, which shows off Cruise’s super-human abilities and sees London once again get destroyed.
This is no mere reboot, of course. The Mummy marks the official beginning the Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe: similar to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe but starring numerous famous literary deviants instead of superheroes. Already, we’ve seen Russell Crowe’s Dr. Henry Jekyll (AKA Mr. Edward Hyde).
Other characters set to appear in the Cinematic Universe with their own feature-length films include Invisible Man (played by Johnny Depp), Wolf Man (rumoured to be played by Dwayne Johnson), Van Helsing, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Bride of Frankenstein (Angelina Jolie is sought for the main role, while Javier Bardem wanted for Frankenstein's monster). Oh, and Luke Evans’s Dracula Untold is maybe/maybe not part of the series.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves: we’ve got The Mummy first. Directed by Alex Kurtzman (People Like Us), the films reaches cinemas 9 June 2017.
