All mums really want this Mother's Day is some alone-time

The count down to Mother’s Day is in full swing, with shop shelves groaning with ‘love my mum’ mugs, coasters and aprons.

But turns out all most mums really want this mother’s day is to be left alone.

Though you might think mums want all the spoiling, a new poll by Mumsnet has revealed that 85% of mums would actually like more than an hour of ‘me-time’ on the day.

However, when asked about their Mother’s Day last year, the survey found that most mums didn’t get their wish, as three quarters didn’t even get a full hour of time to themselves.

Unsurprisingly, lie ins were also top of the Mother’s Day wish-list with 92% hoping they’d get some extra shut-eye.

Sadly, they were left disappointed about that too as over half (58%) of mums were up before 8am last year.

Don’t be thinking breakfast in bed is on the cards either, as 53% of mums said they made it themselves last year, despite hoping their partner or children would do it for them.

And that’s not all. Mums don’t get to sack off the domestic chores either.

When asked which household tasks they’d carried out on Mother’s Day last year, 62% said they’d done some cooking, 58% did the washing, almost half (49%) did cleaning and 11% took the bins out.

When it comes to gifts, something homemade or personal tops the want-list, with 37% of mums saying they would love something made by their children and almost a fifth (18%) saying they’d like something personalised, like a mug or keyring with their kids’ photo or footprint.

And despite it being their day, only two thirds of mums actually admitted to enjoying Mother’s Day.

Commenting on the research Mumsnet CEO Justine Roberts said: “There’s quite a lot of pressure on mothers to be selfless, and it can be difficult for them to ask for what they want, especially if it’s for their early-rising children to go away and take their burnt toast with them.”

“Of course, it’s possible that some mothers cook for relaxation on Mother’s Day – it’s even possible that some enjoy taking the bins out – but it wouldn’t hurt for the nation’s spouses (and children) to assume all domestic responsibilities, for this day at least.”

So dads (and kids) take note, what she really, really wants this year isn’t a bunch of wilting flowers or an overpriced set lunch, she wants to lie in past 8am and not talk to a single person for at least a blissful hour, preferably more.

Otherwise come June, when Father’s Day rolls round, you so know what your day is going to look like.

Just saying.
