Chief Superintendent Andy Brittain, who leads policing in Croydon, said: “We are saddened to hear about the loss of this young woman. We are currently supporting her family while they process this shocking news.

“At this early stage, we believe that the two men were known to the woman and there is no threat to the wider public. I understand the impact this incident will have on the community and we are doing everything in our power to investigate the circumstances of what happened.

"Throughout the day you may notice a higher police presence in the area, please do voice any concerns to officers. Although we have made two arrests, we still need to have an understanding as to what took place last night in Bensham Lane.

"Did you hear anything unusual? Did you see anyone leaving the property? If you did, then please do the right thing and speak with us.”

Anyone with information which could assist the investigation is asked to call 101 quoting CAD 5952/20Jan.
