Murder Mystery: Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston comedy breaks Netflix record

Adam Sandler‘s latest Netflix film Murder Mystery has broken a huge streaming service record.

The actor, who signed a second four-year deal with the streaming service in 2017, reunites with his Just Go With It co-star Jennifer Aniston for the comedy that follows a couple from New York who get caught up in a mystery surrounding the death of an ageing billionaire during a trip to Europe.

Critics may have long fallen out of love with Sandler, but Netflix users haven’t: in its first three days of release, Variety reports that Murder Mystery had been viewed by almost 30.9m users – one of the biggest ever openings for a Netflix original.

For comparison, Will Smith film Bright – once considered a Netflix heavyweight – was watched by 11m in its opening three days.

It’s important to note that a view is counted when a user has streamed at least 70 per cent of the film and, somewhat understandably, the service picks and chooses which titles it releases stats for with a view to highlighting its successes.

The statistic puts Murder Mystery on course to overtake Bird Box, which amassed 80m views over its first month of release, as well as Triple Frontier (52m) and The Highwaymen (40m).
