Murder 'no surprise' on road 'plagued by noise, rows and anti-social mayhem'

A road which is at the centre of a murder enquiry has been plagued with anti-social behaviour issues, according to a councillor. Waseem Zaffar said his phone has been ringing off the hook with complaints about Hunters Road in Lozells.

The road was sealed off on Monday as detectives investigated an incident which left a man dead and another in hospital. Emergency services were called to the scene at 12.30am, where they found one man in a critical condition.

Despite their best efforts, he was declared dead at the roadside. A second man was also given advanced trauma care and rushed to hospital where he is said to be fighting for his life.

Councillor Zaffar said: "I've been raising issues about this road with the police. People are reporting drug dealing out in the open.

"There's loud noise disturbances, rowing in the street, illegal parking. There's an oversaturation of vulnerable people being put in the area and it's all costing us dear."

Councillor Zaffar said the Police and Crime Commissioner is intending to visit the area on October 21. He added: "I'm really angry that all the stuff I have been saying to the local policing team has fallen on deaf ears because there aren't any resources.

"I wasn't shocked when I heard the news of the murder. The community has been raising these issues. Some of the most vulnerable families live on this road."

West Midlands Police said: "We've started a murder investigation after a man found with serious injuries in a Lozells street has died. We were called to Hunters Road, near the junction of Villa Road, at just before 12.25am today (30 September).

"A man was discovered seriously injured and sadly nothing could be done to save him. A second man who was also found hurt and is currently in a serious condition in hospital.

"We're currently working to establish exactly what happened and who was involved. We're reviewing CCTV and carrying out house-to-house enquiries as we investigate.
