A huge cordon is being set up around West Hoe in Plymouth after a woman was killed and police continue to hunt for a suspect. A woman in her 40s was found with serious injuries in West Hoe Road at around 8.55pm on Wednesday, January 22, prompting a huge response from emergency services. Devon and Cornwall Police later confirmed she died in hospital in the early hours of this morning (January 23).

A murder investigation has been launched and police officers have been moving through the West Hoe area throughout the morning. Devon and Cornwall Police are searching for a man, whose identity is known to police, in connection with the woman's death.

As the investigation ramps up, police have called for a complete closure of a large part of Millbay and West Hoe. Plymouth Highways, a social media account run by Plymouth City Council, said: "Police have asked for a full closure of the area marked on the attached map".

The closed area begins at the B3240, next to Plymouth Pavillions. It goes along Lockyer Street and Osborne Place, before it follows alongside the Promenade. Cliff Street, which joins onto the Promenade is included in the cordon and has been closed for much of this morning.

The area continues with the back end of West Hoe Park and Cliff Road, joining onto West Hoe Road at the Radford Road junction. It also includes Walker Terrace and heads down Prospect Place, next to the Plymouth Marine Laboratory. It then follows Citadel Road and Millbay Road, where it meets the start of the cordon once again.

DCI Dave Pebworth said: “Cordons will likely remain in place for the rest of the day and police units will remain in the area. I wish to make the public aware we are looking to locate a man in relation to this incident whose identity is known, and enquiries are ongoing to find him.

“At this time, I would like to reassure the community and further afield in Plymouth that there is no suggestion that there is a wider risk to members of the public.

“There will be a heightened police presence and visibility in the coming days in the area as enquiries are ongoing. We will of course update the public once we have further information."
