Plans for a £1 million village hall have been approved after concerns over noise were addressed. Councilllors had previously put off making a decision on the new facility in Knutton so a noise impact assessment could be carried out.

The village hall is being built on the former site of Knutton Recreation Centre, next to a forthcoming development of 54 new homes, and planning committee members at Newcastle Borough Council were concerned about the potential impact on the future residents.

Environmental health officers recommended a number of conditions to be imposed on the building, including: a requirement for a noise limiting device within each function room; a restriction on hours of opening or on the time that music can be played within the function rooms to no later than 11pm; and the submission of a noise management plan in relation to the outdoor amenity space, potential smoking areas and deliveries.

The planning committee voted to grant the scheme permission subject to these conditions.

The village hall is part of a wider masterplan for Knutton, which has been allocated £3.5 million of government funding from Newcastle's Town Deal. It will replace Knutton's community centre, which closed in 2020 due to concerns over the state of the building.
