Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been detained alongside the country's president and other members of the ruling party in an early morning raid, according to reports.

A spokesman for the governing National League for Democracy told Reuters news agency that Ms Suu Kyi, President Win Myint and other leaders had been "taken" in the early hours of Monday morning.

"I want to tell our people not to respond rashly and I want them to act according to the law," Myo Nyunt said, adding he also expected to be detained.

The move comes after days of escalating tension between the civilian government and the military that have raised fears of a coup in the aftermath of an election the army claims was fraudulent.
