Mystery surrounds the apparent closure of a bar in Barnstaple - six months after a launch party. Fat Cats opened on the High Street in June of last year.

The venue hosted music evenings and live entertainment at the weekends. It operated from the former Maplin electronics shop.

Signs have now been pinned on the window by a debt recovery company. According to Google the bar is 'permanently closed'.

The notice, dated January 8, says Harlow-based Court Enforcement Services Ltd entered the building on "behalf of the landlord" and secured the premises. It says that under the terms of a lease signed in October 2023 the right of the tenant to occupy the building has ended.

It adds the lease was signed by Ranosun Hospitality Ltd, trading as Fat Cats (tenant). "Under the instructions of the landlord PS Leisure Associates we have this day re-entered the premises," says the recovery agent.

There are only three TripAdvisor reviews online. Two reviews in June and August are very positive, praising the clean surroundings and helpful staff. The third review from December says standards were well below what the customer expected.

According to Fat Cats' Facebook page the last event was due to have taken place on New Year's Eve. DevonLive has contacted Fat Cats for comment.
