Mystery Of Missing Family Stumps German Police

Special investigators are hunting for clues to the whereabouts of a mother and daughter who vanished late last month.

Sylvia Schulze, 43, and her 12-year-old daughter Miriam, from the quiet north German district of Drage, were last seen on 22 July.

The girl's father, Marco Schulze, 41, was last seen two days later.

His body was discovered in the River Elbe, some 20 kilometres from the family home, on Friday.

It had been weighed down with a concrete block and is thought to have been in the water for several days, according to German news magazine, Spiegel Online.

German police are reportedly working on the assumption that Mr Schulze jumped from a nearby bridge.

A sonar boat and police divers spent the weekend searching the river for any trace of the mother and daughter.

No evidence pointing to their whereabouts was found, police said, with the exception of a silver bike, understood to have belonged to Mr Schulze.

A police spokesman told Sky News an acquaintance of the Schulzes recognised pictures of the bike and identified it as a gift given to the family.

Nothing appears to be missing from the family home and no suicide notes have been found, according to Germany's Bild newspaper.
