Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service has issued a new statement after a house fire sent smoke "billowing" into the air above a Derby suburb. Fire crews were called to Kingsley Street, in Sinfin, at around 9.40am on Tuesday morning (January 28).

Firefighters used two hose reel jets to extinguish the blaze, which took place on the first floor of the property. A fire engine and two police vehicles remained at the scene until early afternoon. All people inside the property at the time of the blaze were accounted for.

Now, the fire service says its joint investigation with the police has concluded - but the cause of the fire remains a mystery. A spokesperson for the fire service says: "A joint investigation into the cause of a house fire in Sinfin has concluded with the cause remaining unknown.

"Firefighters from Ascot Drive, Kingsway and Nottingham Road attended the fire on Kingsley Street at 9.38am on Tuesday. Upon arrival, fire crews were met with a fire on the first floor of the property.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire. All persons were accounted for and had evacuated the property prior to the arrival of fire crews."

Two police vehicles and a fire engine remained at the scene until around 1pm on Tuesday, but the smell of smoke in the air remained prominent. Alan Buxton, 79, left his house on Kingsley Street at around 10.30am to go the shop. He described seeing smoke billowing from the property, which is just a few hundred yards from his home.

“I left the house and could hear a commotion to my left. I looked and saw a big fire engine blocking the road and a load of people out on the street," he said. "They were all just watching the firemen shooting gallons of water at it.

“It looks as though no one has been harmed, which is the main thing, but it’s frightening and shows just how dangerous fires are. I have never seen anything like it before. Financially I dread to think about the cost of the fire.”

Another resident, Mark Davies, who lives on Carlyle Street, added: "I have been out all morning but I came back and there was blues and twos all over the street. The damage looks really bad but I’m sure the firemen did everything they could.

"There was a little bit of smoke when I came back a couple of hours ago but it seems to have cleared now. The area is a tight-knit community overall but everywhere has its troubles. It’s just so sad to think that someone could’ve lost prized belongings. I just hope they’re OK.”
