Mystery surrounds the final location of Moors Murderer Ian Brady's ashes

The relatives of Ian Brady’s victims have demanded to know where his ashes will be scattered.

Mystery continues to surround where exactly the ashes of the Moors Murderer, who died last week, will be spread.

Brady died aged 79 at Ashworth high-security psychiatric hospital in Merseyside, and the scattering of his remains has caused much controversy.

Opening the inquest into Brady’s death last Tuesday, coroner Christopher Sumner said the body would not be released until assurances were given that the killer’s ashes would not be scattered on Saddleworth Moor, where he buried his young victims.

Brady, along with Myra Hindley, who died in 2002, murdered five people between 1963 and 1965: Pauline Reade, 16; John Kilbride, 12; Keith Bennett, 12; Lesley Ann Downey, 10, and Edward Evans, 17.

Keith Bennett’s body has never been found, but is thought to also be on the moors near Manchester.

The city council in Glasgow, where Brady grew up, also made it clear it would refuse any request for his ashes to be scattered there.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: ‘We have not had such a request but we would refuse that request.

‘We would advise the private crematoria not to accept the request or any such request should it be forthcoming. There has not been any request made.’

Last week’s inquest heard Brady’s solicitor, and the executor of his will, Robin Makin, say there was ‘no likelihood’ the ashes would be scattered on Saddleworth Moor.

But the relatives of Brady’s victims are angry about being kept in the dark about the plans for Brady’s ashes.

They fear the murderer’s remains will still end up on Saddleworth Moor where he buried his victims.

A relative of Lesley Ann Downey, who did not want to named, told the Mirror: ‘Where is Brady’s body? He could have been cremated and yet nobody knows. It is crazy.

‘We should be told. We need to know what they have done with the ashes. We deserve to be told. How can we be 100% sure that they will not end up on the moors. It is appalling.’

The relative said Brady’s ashes should be kept at Ashworth Hospital.

‘His ashes should be put in a hole there,’ the relative said. ‘He should not be allowed to have his ashes scattered wherever he wants.’
