Mystery West Midlands man ‘Mr H’ wins a million on lottery – but first purchase may shock you
A mysterious man from the West Midlands has become a millionaire on the lottery. But the new wealth led the top prize winner to a more humble purchase.
The winner, known only as ‘Mr H’, won £1 million on the National Lottery’s EuroMillions UK Millionaire Maker held on New Year’s Eve (December 31). And with the money Mr H went out and bought a toaster!
But he has more ambitious plans with the rest of the money, with a plan to go to Las Vegas, to perhaps try and win more money. And also to pay off his mortgage.

Usually the EuroMillions Millionaire Maker guarantees to create a millionaire in every draw. But on New Year’s Eve, the draw saw 10 UK millionaires created on the night, including Mr H from the West Midlands and another Mr H, Yorkshireman Andy Hornsby.
The Midlands winner was one of more than nine million lottery players each week at shops or online, with those who play via the app or online having their tickets automatically checked and an email sent if you win. He was offered the chance to release his name, remain anonymous or release some details with ‘partial publicity’.
Andy Carter, Senior Winners’ Advisor at Allwyn, operator of The National Lottery, said, “What toast-ally amazing news for Mr. H, who can now call himself a millionaire! And what better way to celebrate than with a trip to Vegas. Huge congratulations!”
Playing any National Lottery game, like the draw-based EuroMillions, Lotto, Set For Life and Thunderball, help generate around £30 million for National Lottery-funded projects. With more than 700,000 grants awarded to date, the National Lottery said: “This funding touches every part of the UK. From supporting the arts and sport sectors, to empowering local community groups and preserving iconic British landmarks, players' participation makes a difference every single day.“
