Manufacturers love to chase Nürburgring lap times and now it’s Skoda’s turn to boast a new record around the ‘Green Hell’ with its upcoming Kodiaq vRS.
The Czech firm sent a prototype version of its performance-focused SUV around the infamous 12.9-mile circuit with German racing driver and Nordschleife legend Sabine Schmitz at the helm — setting a new fastest time for seven-seat SUVs.
That may sound quite niche, but something of this size achieving a claimed 9:29.84 time is nothing to turn your nose up at — just a minute shy of some hot hatchbacks that tip the scales at half the Kodiaq’s weight.
With the production version of the car set to be revealed in October, little has been shared about the performance it’s packing. That said, Skoda has confirmed it’s powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine producing 236bhp.
The all-wheel-drive machine will also feature ‘Adaptive Chassis Control’ that brings selectable driving modes to the SUV — presumably with at least one that optimises it for the track.
Schmitz, who estimates she has completed over 30,000 laps of the ‘Ring in her lifetime, said: “The Skoda Kodiaq vRS is great fun on the track. Skoda has made full use of its large SUV’s potential with the Kodiaq vRS.

“I can certainly imagine that I’ll be encountering the Kodiaq vRS regularly during my laps around the Nordschleife in future.”
František Drábek, head of compact models at Skoda, added “The Kodiaq vRS equally embodies the versatility and spaciousness of a family SUV as well as emotion and dynamism.”
Keep an eye out for a full reveal of the Skoda Kodiaq vRS at this year’s Paris Motor Show, taking place on October 4-14.
