Yahoo News Naomi Campbell Had a Lot of Thoughts About Haute Couture on 'Making the Cut' Episode 2
Hello and welcome back to the next installment of my latest obsession: Amazon Prime's Making the Cut. Episode 2 was all about haute couture, and for those of you who aren't familiar, it's essentially the highest end of fashion. The garments are constructed by hand from start to finish and are basically a way for designers to show off their skills.
Contestants were tasked with creating two looks: a haute couture design and an accessible counterpart that could be sold on Amazon. At the end of the week, both looks will be part of a fashion show at the historic Musée Des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
The designers kicked off the challenge by roaming the streets of Paris for inspiration. But the drama started back in the studio when Martha Gottwald from Virginia let her lack of sewing skills get in her way. Again. Despite Tim Gunn's insistence that since she has help from a seamstress she doesn't need to know how to sew, she got into her head and questioned her ability to compete with the other designers mid-episode.
We also learned that Milan designer Sabato Russo's mother died a couple weeks before filming started, so he was inspired by her to challenge himself to create something he's never made before: a wedding dress, since she eloped and never got to wear one. TBH watching him talk about her elegance and grace was really touching.
On the runway, some early frontrunners stood out to judges, including last week's winner, Berlin-based Esther Perbandt, Rinat Brodach from Kansas City, and Sabato. But, per usual, it was the OMG yikes moments that stole the show—and it's becoming apparent that Naomi's critique is one of the best parts of Making the Cut.
When LA designer Jonny Cota's couture take on a leather jacket made its way down the catwalk, Naomi quite literally said: "What is this? Oh no no no no no no." And when the judges discovered that Martha's accessible look was safety pinned together, Naomi was not. Here. For. It.
After the show, Naomi didn't sugarcoat her feedback to Martha, saying, "With couture, there's a certain respect you have to have. I mean it goes back centuries and I feel like you disrespected the whole entire word and this assignment because we can all pin and wrap." Spoiler alert! Literally zero humans are surprised that she was sent home.
On a lighter note, Esther swept the competition—again. But Oklahoma-based designer Ji Won Choi's streetwear-inspired dress impressed the powers that be at Amazon Fashion so much that it's also being sold on Amazon. Take that, Esther!
