Naomi Campbell hits out at lack of diversity at Vogue with scathing Instagram post

Naomi Campbell has called for more diversity at fashion magazine Vogue after sharing an image of its all-white team photo under its previous editor.

The British supermodel sparked debate by posting an image to Instagram which originally appeared in former editor Alexandra Shulman’s final edition.

Alongside the picture, Campbell told how she “looks forward to an inclusive and diverse” new team under the magazine’s new editor Edward Enninful.

She wrote in the post: “This is the staff photo of @britishvogue under the previous editor #AlexandraSchulman. Looking forward to an inclusive and diverse staff now that @edward_enninful is the editor.”

Campbell was named as a contributing editor by Enninful, who is the first non-white person, and the first man, to edit the magazine in its 100 year history.

The model’s fans responded to the post with fury, with one Instagram user writing: “That's quite shocking for 2017. Edward has his work cut out. Let's hope he modernises and together let's watch as profits grow as he makes the magazine inclusive to all colours.”

“Diversity and inclusive practices are a must especially in fashion...black and brown people's cultural influence in fashion are innumerable and should be reflected in every aspect of the industry.”

Others defended the departed editor, with another social media users saying: “Diversity for diversity's sake is destructive and discriminatory… People should be hired on merit of their ability and not arbitrary identity - racial or otherwise.”

Others suggested the image suggested a “class divide” more than it did a racial one, hitting out at the media for a lack of diversity among its staff.

“There's not so much a race divide here as a class divide and ultimately who runs the media? The upper class - as seen in the picture of Vogue's staff.”

The user added: “So if you live in a nice, gated house in Islington, and most of your colleagues and friends do too (who are also mostly white) where are you meeting anyone of diversity? So then why would you even think to hire them or feature them in your publication if they are the 'other'?”

Enninful has long campaigned against racism and prejudice, and received an OBE for services to diversity in the fashion industry in 2016.
