THE Cornish Pirates Amateurs came close in a tightly contested affair that saw the team pick up a narrow loss on the road.

This fourth versus third clash in North Devon was always likely to be close, and so it proved, with the home side securing a narrow victory, writes Phil Westren.

The ‘Ams’ scored three tries through Sam Coogan, Daniel Rhys Evans, and Rhys Brownfield who also kicked three conversions and two penalties.

Commenting post-match, Pirates Amateurs’ head coach Murray Westren said: "This was a disappointing result for us against a physical Bideford side, and especially when considering we had more than enough chances to win the game.

"We played well for large periods but unfortunately didn’t manage some of the key moments well enough.

"Luckily, we have a very exciting week ahead and a great challenge at the Mennaye on Saturday when league leaders Cullompton visit.

"It promises to be a fascinating third versus first contest that should attract a big crowd. The kick-off is at 2.30pm."

Final Score: Bideford 29 - Pirates Amateurs 27
